The Sibley Guide to Birds contains marvelous illustrations originally drawn by the author using watercolors. This is a great identification guide, not only for adult birds, but juveniles, also. |

White Pelicans
Cooperative Fishing
| Incredible fishing machines,
the "white pelican" fleet is setting out. The pelicans have just spotted a
school of small fish swimming through this little "pass" in the saltgrass
flats. The bait fish have gone from left to right in the image. |
 |
 |
The whole group of pelicans
have caught up to the school of small fishes. The pelicans in the lead (right
side of image) are starting to close off the net. They are all carrying their
wings slightly elevated and half-spread. Presumably this offers a much bigger
profile to the panicked, scurrying school of prey. |
 |
They have closed off
the noose. With their heads submerged they are scooping up big bills full of
fish. |
| Now to lay their wings
back and savor lunch. |
